The “1995” photography series is a poetic reflection on writing, memory, time, and loss. While exploring a junkyard in Scotland, I discovered a discarded hand-written diary of one woman’s life, written in 1995. Inspired by research I was doing at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh at the time, I inverted the specimen preservation process by placing each diary page in a separate water-filled vessel, not to preserve the woman’s text, but to emphasize the ephemeral qualities of memory and journaling. As each page broke down in the water, it became a catalyst for the growth of self-contained botanic ecosystems. A new organic order replaced the codified order of human language. I never read the diary.
